Inspired by
the consumer and Pick ‘n Pay, we are focusing our efforts on
the Limflex calf – this being the Limousin x Angus cross.
The South
African market demands an early maturing carcase that puts
on sufficient fat, with a good conformation and tender beef.
Pick ‘n Pay
is using the well-known, global “Angus” brand in their
marketing campaign. The Limousin adds extra meat onto the
carcase and the Angus adds the extra fat and tenderness that
our market requires.
The trend is
towards larger carcases, and tests are currently being done
with the Angus x Limousin calves growing out to between 600
and 630 kilograms and slaughtering at 300 to 330 kilograms
carcase size.
The Limousin
x Friesland cross calves are also very impressive. We look
forward to participating in the slaughter competition at the
Pretoria show in August 2009 with these crosses.
